In this thesis, the advantages of renewable energy sources are studied as well as the risks of
investing in them, such as market and operational risks. Game theory is a satisfactory way
of approaching and analysing these risks in finding the trade-offs they create towards a
potential investment. Then the risks are categorised by their nature ( political, economic and
practical) and the 5 scenarios for dealing with them are analysed such as the reinforcement
of feed in tariff, energy auctions , the cooperation needed from all sides ( state, producers
and traders) and the labour required to implement them. The thesis consists of 5 chapters:
The first chapter is the introduction to the subject of investment in energy market projects.
The second chapter is the literature review on renewable energy, its market and the risks
involved in new constructions. Τhe third chapter presents the research methodology and
research questions. The fourth chapter analyzes risk mitigation measures, de-risking tools,
and alternative policy scenarios for renewable energy investments, the last chapter contains
the conclusions of the study and discusses the study’s limitations while offering
recommendations for future research.
