Undoubtedly, today we live in the era of digitalization and the data it generates. People now have the ability to exchange and transfer information freely and to have immediate access to knowledge and data that would have been difficult to find in the past. Data exploration plays a significant role in transforming the shipping industry by optimizing operations, enhancing safety, improving efficiency, and more. By leveraging various data sources—such as operational and environmental data—shipping companies can make informed decisions to reduce costs, predict maintenance needs, ensure regulatory compliance, and so on. Advanced technologies, big data analytics, and machine learning enable deeper insights into vessel performance, fuel consumption, cargo management, and many other activities of maritime businesses.
The present study consists of seven (7) chapters, through which the investigation and utilization of data in shipping, as well as their impact on businesses in the sector, are examined.
The first chapter defines the subject under study, the reasons for conducting this research, and its significance to society, science, and the business world.
The second and third chapters present the theoretical part of the research, including the literature review and the theoretical framework supporting the topic.
Chapters four through seven refer to the methodology, results, and conclusions derived from the questionnaire and the research conducted. Despite challenges such as data security, quality, and interoperability, the future of data use in shipping appears promising, with innovations such as autonomous vessels and real-time data exchange leading to further improvements in operational efficiency and sustainability. Among other things, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the fastest-growing fields of technological development. Just a few decades ago, the use of AI in business activities was in its “early adoption stage,” and its potential was still somewhat theoretical. Since then, AI technologies and applications have advanced and added value to businesses. In the digital age, AI technologies are improving and emerging as the next wave of innovation. Thus, Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the traditional practices once used in shipping. There are many areas within the maritime industry where Artificial Intelligence has a significant impact and has achieved major transformations. A key feature of these results is that companies have turned toward the collection and processing of data, whose use is becoming increasingly important. Data management is critical for strategic decision-making, and many companies are investing in technologies and skills to utilize data effectively. The transition to a new era, characterized by the term “smart shipping,” has already begun.
