This thesis examines sports tourism, a rapidly growing sector that combines physical activity with travel experiences. The aim of the research is to analyze the significance of sports tourism for social, economic, and environmental development, as well as to explore the impacts of major sports events at both local and global levels. The thesis focuses on evaluating the contribution of sports tourism to local development, infrastructure enhancement, and economic growth through increased tourist flow and the creation of new business opportunities. Additionally, the environmental challenges associated with organizing sports events are analyzed, and sustainable practices are proposed to reduce the ecological footprint.
The methodology includes case study analysis from both international and Greek events, such as the 2004 Olympic Games and the Athens Authentic Marathon, as well as the use of data to assess the economic and environmental impacts. In this context, the application of sustainable practices is examined, including the use of renewable energy sources and the enhancement of environmental awareness among visitors, aiming to reduce the ecological footprint of the events. At the same time, the thesis focuses on the impacts of sports tourism on areas hosting major sporting events, both from an economic and social perspective, and how these events influence the image and development of these areas on an international level.
In conclusion, the thesis emphasizes the need for a balanced model of sports tourism development, one that enhances socioeconomic benefits while ensuring the sustainability of destinations hosting major sporting events. The implementation of strategies to strengthen environmental awareness, the adoption of green practices, and the collaboration of all stakeholders are essential for achieving sustainable development in the field of sports tourism.
