The contemporary business environment demands adaptability to the growing
challenges of the macroeconomic landscape. Especially for the shipping industry, the
interconnectivity of business entities, geopolitics and macroeconomics leads to a
dynamic interplay that requires continuous transformation and adaptation. The latest
systematic risks, from tariffs to the geopolitical conflicts, manifest as highly probable
but often neglected “Grey Rhinos”, creating an uncertain environment, most shipping
related companies are unprepared to combat. This dissertation aims to discuss the Grey
Rhinos of the environment a ship-brokerage firm operates under the scope of strategic
marketing and complex adaptive systems theory. Eventually, the study leads to the
concept of ship-brokerage reports for C-suite recipients (CEO, CSO, CCO, CFO,
Shipowner) including threads and trends that were identified in the market analysis and
environmental scanning of the marketing plan, repositioning the firm from transactional
intermediary to strategic advisor. The fragmented business environment underscores
the necessity for innovative business informational flows and solutions that support
corporations in enhancing resilience, through the complex adaptive systems theory.
