Undoubtedly, cultivating civic education skills constitutes one of the most critical challenges of our time. The ongoing political and social crises, combined with the widespread depoliticization and disengagement of younger generations from sociopolitical processes, highlight the urgent need to strengthen active citizenship through education. At the same time, the teaching of humanities—and particularly history—still relies on outdated methods that fail to meet the demands of the contemporary era.
This thesis aims to propose an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of history by linking it with civic education. Specifically, the study focuses on the design and implementation of a board game enhanced with augmented reality, which draws upon the work of Thucydides to foster active citizenship and historical consciousness. Students are invited to assume the roles of historical figures, make strategic decisions, and reflect on the consequences of their actions, while developing skills in historical interpretation, critical thinking, and responsible civic participation.
The game is based on the AR tutor platform, which enables the enrichment of printed οr digital educational materials with digital content. Within the framework of this study, examples of similar history education games implemented in Greece are also presented. Furthermore, the thesis examines how AR tutor can be effectively used to design interactive and game-based learning activities that promote engagement, historical empathy, and civic awareness.
