This undergraduate thesis centers on the creation of an interactive educational game designed to raise environmental awareness among young users. The game integrates simple mechanics, such as waste collection and recycling, to teach fundamental principles of sustainability through gamified interactions.
As the player progresses through various environments—such as a city, park, and beach—they collect trash and are tasked with sorting it into appropriate recycling bins. Proper waste management rewards players with sustainability points, experience (XP), and level advancement. By accumulating in-game rewards, players can unlock eco-friendly modes of transportation, like electric bikes and scooters.
The game was developed using the Unity game engine and programmed in C#. Object-oriented programming principles and design patterns, such as the Singleton, were implemented in the development. To track player progress and high scores, local file-based storage was utilized.
This serious game highlights the potential of combining technology and education to encourage environmental responsibility, all while providing an engaging and enjoyable experience for users.
