In this thesis a parametric analysis of modern storage systems is carried out in terms of the equipment required for the handling of the individual processes within the storage center.
In the first chapter, basic concepts such as those of supply chain, logistics and warehouses are analysed. The transformation of traditional warehouses into modern Logistics Centers is deemed necessary to meet market requirements. Modern infrastructures use advanced technologies that enhance efficiency, while the Greek market is witnessing growth with new Logistics Centers and investments.
The next chapter discusses the equipment of a warehouse center which is divided into three categories: storage equipment, handling equipment and order picking equipment. It is worth noting that these categories are related to non-automated centers, where employees use the equipment for their tasks. To serve different needs and conditions in each category there are several types of equipment; choosing the right equipment is vital to the efficiency of the warehouse.
The increasing needs for productivity and accuracy are driving the adoption of new technologies such as automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomously moving robots (AMRs). In chapter three we will analyse these technologies by looking at their key features as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
The paper concludes with a case study of a dairy company that went through a reorganization of its distribution center to solve old problems. The company consolidated two factories and distribution centers with the aim of increasing efficiency and reducing operating costs. To address the challenges, it made changes such as reconfiguring space, new storage systems and implementing advanced technologies such as Vision Picking and WMS, thus demonstrating the importance of innovation and adapting to modern market demands to improve productivity and efficiency.
