The present thesis focuses on the creation of a smart health measurement device, examining the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications in the health sector. The thesis analyzes the IoT ecosystem, communication protocols, threats and best security practices, as well as software vulnerabilities and protection measures for security. Additionally, it explores IoT applications in health through humidity and temperature sensors, heart rate and blood oxygen saturation sensors, and motion detection for fall prevention, highlighting the trends in innovation and development.
The thesis is based on a project developed within the course “Security Applications in the Internet of Things” at the University of Piraeus, based on the STM32 microcontroller. The thesis presents a detailed analysis of the hardware, focusing on the ESP32 microcontroller, the methods of installation and operation, as well as its seamless functionality. The implementation framework of the application includes experiments related to environmental comfort, handling high-risk emergency situations, and fall control using an accelerometer-gyroscope. Furthermore, experiments related to heart rate and blood oxygen saturation sensors will be presented in the context of the ESP32.
The conclusions and future extensions highlight the importance of creating measurement devices in the health sector through smart IoT devices, while providing specific prospects for further development and improvement. The thesis meticulously follows the development process, presenting significant applications that can enhance the quality of healthcare through IoT technology.
Overall, the thesis extensively examines the world of IoT in health, providing substantial information on security techniques and applications related to the creation of a measurement device for smart health.
