The aim of this thesis, which was prepared within the framework of the MBA TQM postgraduate program, is to present the management of hazardous waste of the Hellenic Army and to draw conclusions.
This topic was chosen, of course, because of my military status and with a willingness to contribute to the Technical Corps where I serve. The topic was chosen to capture and investigate the management of hazardous waste in the light of reducing their environmental impact to protect the environment.
Military authorities around the world now recognize that effective environmental management is a key factor in securing operations on a long-term basis and that it is vital that the environmental impact of Defense activities is considered in depth.
The defense industry, due to its huge expansion in recent years, is a very important producer of hazardous waste, globally. The current year 2024, in the framework of the national strategic plan for the revitalization of the defense industry, the strengthening of innovation and technology development, is characterized as a "year of transformation for the Greek defense industry, with the establishment of the Hellenic Centre for Defense Research and Innovation Development".
In our country, the Land Army is an important part of the defense industry. In its effort to perform its basic mission, which is none other than to defend and ensure the territorial integrity and security of the country, it implements on a daily basis a series of operational, technical and administrative activities, which also generate hazardous waste. It is also distinguished for its contribution to civil protection by participating in civil protection and disaster response activities, with a view to protecting the environment and taking measures to limit adverse effects on it.
Hazardous waste, as defined in the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) and related to the diverse activities of the Armed Forces, includes a variety of substances for the management of which special procedures are followed, in harmony with the European and national legislation. In this paper I deal with the brief description of the activities that generate hazardous waste in the Hellenic Land Army, the main types of hazardous waste generated and the existing methods of their management. In conjunction with the above, reference is made to the policy of international organizations regarding the management of hazardous waste, as well as the existing legislation, and how these are incorporated into the environmental protection policy of the Ministry of Defense (MoD). Finally, I make reference to the feasibility of using environmental management systems (EMS) in order to manage hazardous waste more effectively. All of the above lead to conclusions to be used by any interested parties.
