The maritime sector plays a pivotal role in global trade, facilitating the movement of goods and promoting economic growth. However, the development of this sector has come at a significant environmental cost, leading to various ecological challenges. This paper thoroughly examines the environmental impacts of the shipping sector, with a particular focus on Greek ports, while exploring the adoption of green practices as a means of mitigating these impacts. The research begins by providing a comprehensive overview of the shipping industry, its historical evolution and the diverse range of activities in which ports are involved. The environmental impacts of shipping activities are explored in depth, shedding light on issues such as air pollution, water pollution and soil contamination. The paper then introduces the concept of green ports as a sustainable solution to these environmental challenges. It outlines a broader framework of solutions for the development of green ports, focusing on core principles and policies that include, among others, enhancing energy efficiency, integrating renewable energy sources, promoting green supply chains, and implementing integrated waste management programs. This empirical analysis delves into the current state of green practices in Greek ports, with Piraeus and Thessaloniki as the main subjects. A benchmarking against leading European ports highlights differences in environmental commitment, highlighting areas where Greek ports have room for improvement. In conclusion, this research highlights the urgent need for Greek ports to fully adopt green practices. As the global community intensifies efforts to combat climate change and protect ecosystems, the port industry is called upon to play a key role in this collective endeavor.
