Abstract

As everything around us in all fields is inevitably dragged along by the laws of evolution and progress, so the field of digital culture and cultural technology will not remain unaffected. We’re already seeing that with the rapid technological development of both infrastructures and networks as well as devices in general, a huge change is taking place in the creation and upgrading of cultural applications. Virtual (VR), augmented (AR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies, or as these technologies are now collectively defined as extended reality (XR), constitute a new field of action with infinite possibilities of use, which before we couldn’t even think about them. We’re noticing that from time to time, changes and upgrades are made to softwares and technologies which rapidly advancing on new paths of technological creation. We have now entered the meta-era where the digital world becomes an extension of the real world, creating the metaverse. In the world of the metaverse, with the parallel exploitation of the technologies that compose it, the development and the possibilities that the field of digital culture has and will have multiply exponentially. New dimensions are given that now include the human-user himself with the participation of his senses in the cultural applications. As part of this assignment, an attempt was made to create a digital 3D map for the city of Piraeus in a virtual environment, with the most-known landmarks in 3D format. The landmarks were converted through photogrammetry method into 3D and placed on the map. The purpose of creating the map is to be the trigger for the cultural promotion of Piraeus, the creation of a cultural route but also its use as an educational tool for further uses with the improvement and addition of other functions.
