This paper deals with hydrogen as a marine fuel and how this can contribute to the sustainability of shipping.
More specifically, the first chapter refers to the reasons that require the transition of shipping to the use of zero carbon fuel, i.e. the impact of conventional marine fuels on the greenhouse effect and climate change.
The second chapter develops the use of hydrogen as a fuel in shipping and more specifically: what it is, how it is produced, how it is stored, how it is transported and how it can be used in internal combustion engines and fuel cells.
The third chapter analyzes international legislation and regulations relating to the use of hydrogen as a marine fuel.
The fourth chapter of the work refers to the techno-economic assessment of the implementation of hydrogen as fuel for ships, with reference to both the original and operating cost of installation and use.
Finally, the work closes by listing some conclusions on the issue in question.
