Abstract
The main subject of this thesis is the principles of new product design and development in a
small Greek family business. It is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, the concept of
family business is defined and its characteristics are described. The advantages and
disadvantages of family businesses are mentioned and their forms of financing are outlined. In
the second chapter, the product concept and the product development process are defined. This
chapter covers the identification of customer needs, the difference between needs and
specifications, and the process of identifying customer needs. It also describes how to create an
idea- proposal and its design thinking. Also mentioned in this chapter are the selection of product
ideas, their evaluation techniques and their screening. It also mentions idea comparison tools and
idea evaluation. Reference is made to the testing of product ideas and its process. The subject of
the third and the fourth chapter is the study of a case study, namely the company "Comfort
Handmade Furniture". In the third chapter, the company is presented and in the fourth chapter,
the theory is applied on the case study. In the last and fifth chapter, some conclusions are drawn.
