The healthcare industry is one of the industries undergoing digital transformation, both in the way patients are diagnosed and the way they are monitored in hospitals, health centers and other medical facilities. It must be recognized that the application of technology in telemedicine can in no way replace clinical (traditional) medicine and cannot by itself provide solutions to all medical problems. However, no one can deny that its usefulness is immense and its advantages are many for all concerned. In particular, during the recent global health crisis and also during recent pandemic crises, interest in telemedicine has clearly increased considerably, as many patients (especially those with chronic diseases or Covid-19 patients) are largely monitored remotely in order to avoid serious health complications. In general, the contribution of telemedicine to improving health is significant, as health is a constitutionally guaranteed good and concerns all patients, whether they are treated by the public (NHS) or private hospitals.
In this paper, telemedicine will be analysed through definitions, references to medical disciplines and distinctions with concepts that are almost identical or part of it. The technological development in this field will be referred to with references to AI, Machine Learning, 5G and metaverse era so that once the term has been clarified, the regulatory framework both at National, European and International level will be extensively analysed. The critical issues of privacy, data protection, privacy security, medical error, data leakage risk assessment and issues of liability, ethics and morality will be extensively analysed as they are the biggest issues of global debate and reflection. The above will also be based on case study that will highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of telemedicine. Finally, the results of a survey regarding the perception of Healthcare Professionals in the use of telemedicine during the Covid-19 period, will be presented.
