Abstract

This thesis was completed as part of the Master's Program of Studies "Bioeconomy, Circular Economy and Sustainable Development" of the University of Piraeus and forms an analysis of the supply chain of a particular industry; the pharmaceutical one. The objective of this thesis is to present and examine the characteristics and peculiarities of pharmaceutical drugs which can impact their supply chain management in Greece and to use the distribution center of the Pharmaserve-Lilly company as a case study. Firstly, a qualitative analysis is performed, in which concepts such as the supply chain, reverse supply chain, inventory and green supply chain are analyzed. Next, emphasis is placed on the logistical component, as well as the necessary information systems to ensure seamless logistics operations. In this qualitative part of the work, key elements of the supply chain are highlighted which directly address the requirements of pharmaceuticals. Following this, a presentation of the pharmaceutical industry is made, citing key elements for the regulatory framework and financial data, with the ultimate goal of applying logistics to this specific sector. Finally, the current framework for the supply of drugs in the Greek market is described and, through a SWOT analysis, important information on its progress, challenges and possible improvements is derived. The practical application of the work follows, where a study of the distribution center of the pharmaceutical company Pharmaserve-Lilly is conducted. In particular, the analysis covers the entire storage system, the quality control and computerization systems and describes all the procedures followed for the transport of drugs and the organization of a state-of-the-art distribution center, based on the information collected. Following the study of the available bibliography, the information regarding the supply chain of pharmaceuticals in Greece and the case of the company, the work concludes with the presentation of the conclusions regarding the evolution of the sector in Greece, the possible challenges and the listing of ways for a supply chain that is more sustainable and has a competitive advantage.
