Freight transport in the 21st century through combined road-rail systems has developed rapidly in recent years. The more efficient the combined transport is and with an upward trend in the cost of road transport, the more attractive the combined transport seems and the distance necessary for recourse is gradually reduced in combined systems.
The work undertaken in the field of a combined rail road system reveals that in the next decade the
road traffic can double.
In the context of environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable development, the European Union urges a system of means of transport which will strengthen competition between transporters.
Also the combined transports were implemented about thirty years ago and initially it was usually proposed in road-rail transports. Then they also included inland sea transports.
The upward development of combined transport that draws a significant proportion of traffic from long routes will contribute to the community having an adequate road system. In the central areas of the community the main obstacle includes traffic congestion and environmental impacts. The push of a volume of transport in less saturated and more environmentally friendly media it could be significant.
A factor that could significantly contribute to the rise of combined transport is the target set for the limit of emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases that cause the "greenhouse" effect. This means that a policy designed with an ultimate aim to promote multiple transport systems can become quite efficient in achieving one of the main objectives of the community.
The main cargoes that are handled are first bulk cargoes which include dry or liquid cargoes where their packaging is not like minerals and cereals. The second category of cargoes are packaged bulk cargoes (break bulk) which concern general cargoes where they have been packed, for example, in bags, containers, containers, etc.
The category that needs special treatment for their transport are liquid gases and loads that require specific temperatures.
