This paper aims at the theoretical analysis of human skills and competences, their connection with sustainability and the economy of the business world. It analyses the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed to thrive in a sustainable world, as well as their effective functioning for an education system that promotes skills with creativity and awareness. Reference is made to future skills, as a key objective of the OECD's global agenda up to 2030, and to the triple helix model in order to identify systematic changes and correlations that have a fundamental and systematic impact on organizations. It also analyses some cases such as New Zealand on educational progress through online learning, the case of South Korea and China's case of virtual reality. In relation to the challenges in the economy, automation seems to have dominated the professions and entrepreneurship in education is a major issue linked to the difference in choice between theoretical and scientific disciplines for future job absorption. Finally, as a proposal for the educational sector, combined teaching and differentiated and inverted classrooms are promoted as a means of creating schools that aim exclusively at competences and reject classes and grades.
