Abstract
Small businesses are an important pillar of the Greek economy, employing a significant workforce and contributing to the country's GDP to a degree multiple of their proportion compared to other sized companies. Over the past years there has been a concerted shift towards the adoption of new technologies, in the wider context of the digital transformation of modern life, including the business world, regardless of the size of the business. An important aspect of the digital transformation of businesses, especially small businesses, is the adoption of digital and information systems.
The incentives that push small businesses to adopt digital systems are no different from those of other sized businesses and mainly sum up the need to improve not only the profitability but the cost efficiency and their overall efficiency in general. However, there is a difference in the speed at which small businesses are transformed digitally and at which small businesses adopt digital systems when compared to other sized enterprises, and vis-à-vis large businesses, but also in the challenges they face and the obstacles they have to overcome along the adoption path. The adoption of digital systems by small enterprises is a major organizational change according to literature and it is examined in this context in this thesis. Hereby, the incentives, challenges, obstacles and benefits, primarily the organizational and financial expectations of small businesses, of the adoption of digital systems by small businesses are examined in this thesis.
In addition, this thesis demonstrates the contribution of coordinated efforts to finance small enterprises in order to adopt digital systems and assesses the contribution of such efforts as the ESPA programs as well as other programs supporting innovation, entrepreneurship and generally supporting the digital transformation of Greek small enterprises. This thesis findings demonstrate that the road towards the adoption of digital systems in small businesses is yet long, but significant developments are already recorded, creating a prosperous environment for future development of Greek small businesses.
