This dissertation is dedicated to an analysis of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and its applications in Seafaring. The historical timeline refers to the system’s principles and utilization and aims to highlight the influence that GPS has implemented between humans and navigation. Then, reference is made to the GPS signal from its composition until its final demodulation by the receiver, and to the solution of the receiver’s position equation. The key characteristics of the signal are mentioned, such as the codes that modulate the carrier wave and how each code is used by the receiver. Finally, some GPS systems used by other countries are presented and some practical applications of a GPS system in our daily life are mentioned.
