The capital structure in corporate finance is the combination of different forms of
external capital used to finance a business. It consists of equity, debt (borrowed
funds) and preferred shares and is analyzed in the company's balance sheet. The
higher the debt component compared to other sources of capital, the greater the
financial leverage the firm has. Excessive debt can increase a company's risk
and reduce its financial flexibility, which at some point worries investors and
results in higher capital costs. The management of the company is responsible
for creating a capital structure for the company that makes the best use of
financial leverage and keeps the cost of capital as low as possible. In this thesis
we made a search for finding the capital structure. To accomplish this objective
we utilized a sample of Greek listed companies (excluding the financial sector)
on the Athens Stock Exchange which was studied and analyzed. The empirical
research was made for the year of the pandemic 2020 as a form of stress test
and therefore the results do not have universal validity for a normal period.
