Abstract
Maritime transport holds the largest and the most important share of the world
transportation with a percentage of up to 80%. The main purpose of this study is to
investigate the issue of the important reasons, which are responsible for the delays in
the handling of containers in the major ports of the world in the current situation and
to spotlight the consequences of these disturbances. Firstly, this dissertation examines
the role of maritime transport and the significance of the performance of seaports in
the light of the problems that arise in the current port system. Secondly, this
dissertation lays special emphasis on scrutinizing the side effects of Covid-19 that
affected maritime trade and port approaches, while at the same time highlights
changes in maritime trade and the reduction of port calls. In addition to the
aforementioned, the study thoroughly analyzes the negative impact of Covid-19 upon
the connectivity amongst the largest container ports worldwide. In conclusion, some
proposals and corrective measures are presented to improve the efficiency of ports in
the field of the maritime supply chain.
