Τhis thesis examines the blockchain technology from the introduction of the idea behind Bitcoin since the publication of Bitcoin until today. A reference is made to the basic functions of blockchain technology as well as the advantages and disadvantages of this technology. It will be examined how blockchain technology evolved from the technology of crypto currencies into a technology that can be applied and improve various industries such as finance, insurance, banking and energy. In addition, a reference to the decentralized finance will be made which constitutes an important parameter that played a major role in the development of blockchain technology. For a full understanding of this technology and the reasons for its major growth there will be a record of the global economic status and how it is related to the need of citizens to look for alternative means of storing value. The main contribution of this thesis is to record 19 scientific papers in areas of academic interest related to the use of blockchain technologies and their analysis based on common points of improvement and common points of concern. Finally, some conclusions will be discussed on what extend is blockchain technology applicable, to the already existing financial systems.
