Transportation is directly linked to the contemporaneous economic conditions since they affect the mobility of people and goods. In 2009, Greece entered into a period of economic crisis which led to disturbances in urban transport. The present doctoral dissertation aims to explore the effect of the financial crisis of 2009 on the change and choice in urban means of transport. More specifically, we examine how demographic, socioeconomic and transport factors influence mobility with respect to the change and choice in the means of transport in urban Athens.
In order to accomplish the aforementioned, we collected data from the metropolitan area of Athens using a paper questionnaire in 2016. Discrete choice models where designed and employed to analyze and quantify the effects of the economic crisis on urban transport. Results show that public transport coverage plays the most important role in changing mean of transport, while the choice of public transport is mainly influenced by car ownership, sex, age and the level of income. In addition, this research also presents the qualitative, quantitative and social characteristics of commuters so that transport policymakers can benefit further.
