The purpose of the dissertation is to explore the importance of institutional quality in the distribution of labor share as a percentage of GDP. In this context, it investigates the reasons that may explain the reduction of labor share as a percentage of GDP in the recent decades. Further, it focuses on the relationship between institutional quality and labor share.
By applying a mixed linear model, the results show that institutional quality is a positive and important predictor of labor’s share of GDP. The findings are confirmed for the entire sample as well as the countries belonging to Groups 2 and 3. On the contrary, the findings for Group 1 countries (i.e., countries with low institutional quality) show that the GDP per capita effect on labor share as a percentage of GDP is greater than that of institutional quality.
Finally, regarding why labor share in GDP tends to decline, it seems that globalization, automation, and low institutional quality are the most important factors.
