The scope of this thesis is the analysis of the construction field based on Porter’s model: Forces driving industry competition. According to Michael Porter, an authority on competitive strategy, the success of a corporation, which is the ultimate profit potential, is determined by five basic competitive forces: threat of new entrants, rivalry among existing firms, threat of substitute products or services, bargain power of buyers and bargain power of suppliers.
A general and theoretical introduction to the environmental variables of a corporation is initially presented: the societal environment, the task environment and the internal environment.
General information concerning the construction field, the construction activities and upper class classification construction companies is analysed next, followed by the analysis of the construction field based on Porter’s model of five competitive forces.
In the end, a theoretical description of the three interdependent levels of strategy is cited: the corporate-level strategy, the business-level strategy and the functional-level strategy. The corporate strategies implemented by the construction companies complete this thesis.
