The aim of this thesis is to examine the impact of digital transformation on the business models of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that are active in the Business & Technology Services industry - an industry that, according to relevant studies, is among those which have the highest digital maturity and are considered one of the digital pioneers of the Greek economy. This thesis reviews the theoretical foundation of digital transformation considering the transformation of business processes, customer relationships, human resources and digital capabilities. Then it examines how the digital transformation transforms the organization’s business model, as well as how it affects each business model’s different component thereof. Furthermore, in order to understand how the theoretical foundation of digital transformation can be applied in Business & Technology Services SMEs, an in-depth analysis of the case of KiNNO Consultants Ltd, a Greek consulting company, focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation support services provision, was carried out. Based on literature review findings, qualitative information and interviews with KiNNO Consultants Ltd executives, answers to the following questions were seek:
- What is the key driver for digital transformation in a Business & Technology Services’ firm?
- Which are the key business model components of a Business & Technology Services’ firm that are affected and/or transformed and how, during the process of digital transformation?
Results indicate that the digital transformation of a Greek firm active in the Business Services and Technology sector should first focus on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of its operating activities, as well as, upgrading the digital skills of its human resources.
Human resources seem to be the key to success when implementing digital transformation strategies and projects in small and medium-sized in the Business Services and Technology sector - a fact that is also reflected in the business model of KiNNO Consultants Ltd. Last but not least, the main business model components that digital transformation seems to have impact on are the building blocks of the "introvert" part of the business (key resources, core activities and cost) which is strongly affected by its human resources.
