The crisis in the construction sector is particularly intense and there is a risk that may have permanent consequences. This crisis is highlighted by the very serious losses recorded by many construction companies in all their financial statements, which also contributed to their sustainability. The results of the above existing situation are also found in the real estate market and especially in private dwellings whose fair value has decreased significantly. Forecasts for the entire construction sector are bleak as more and more negative events have a strong impact on the Greek Economy as well.
In the period 2008-2013, the economic crisis is progressively increasing with the intensity of every sector of entrepreneurship in Greece. Exception to this unfavorable economic situation has not been the construction industry, which show significant losses. The GEK-TERNA Group, a business affected by the crisis, is a strong capital of the construction industry but also the right environment for extracting useful and safe conclusions about the economic situation of the entire sector during the period of financial insecurity.
The main subject of this master thesis is the financial analysis of GEK-TERNA Group through the ratios. Moreover, the following chapters present a sectoral study and presentation of both the Group and also various competing companies in the sector. The published financial statements of the Group (Balance Sheet and Income Statement) are interpreted by the key ratios of liquidity, activity, productiveness and capital composition.
In particular, for the segment of financial analysis, the cross-strait analysis method of accounting is applied by calculating ratios and using software programs (Excel) to process the results. Finally, the conclusions drawn from tis analysis are accompanied by proposals that will contribute to the Group’s effectiveness and profitability in the near future.
