This master thesis is an attempt to apply the use of ontologies in the field of highschool geometry, using new technologies in education and as well use Semantic Web technologies, reflecting the concept of Circle and concepts associated with it in a RDF ontology.
We used SKOS, which is a simple system of organizing knowledge, to provide a model for the expression of the basic structure and the content of the concepts that concern us. As an application of RDF (Resource Description Framework) which is a general-purpose language, SKOS allows concepts to be compiled and published on the web, linked to data on the web and which be embedded in other conceptual shapes. With the Turtle syntax, it was easy to capture the concepts we are interested in, through a compact and natural language that uses shortcuts for sharing methods and data types.
Then, using the GraphDB application, we visualized our ontology by uploading the Turtle file to the free version that works through a browser. There, we can receive the graph of the entire ontology or through the choice to search for concepts, to receive only the graph for the concept of interest, along with its related concepts. Also, in the environment of GraphDB we can access all the information related to our concepts, as long as we have registered them in the Turtle file. Finally, any concept can be linked to an example in Geogebra and connected to it, after having preceded an account in Geogebra and loading there the Geogebra files with our examples.
Thus, the application of GraphDB with the visualization of the ontologies illustrating the material ofgeometry of the Gymnasium, can be an auxiliary tool for the teacher during the teaching. The teacher can browse the material and see the links between the concepts. Thus he/she acquire easy and quick access to the material compared to searching in a book. However, even for learners, it may be useful to use this application. The main reason is that they can easily cover any deficiency they may have, when taught a concept and want to remember previous knowledge that have been taught they can be connected in the present sense. The visualization of the concepts and the connections between them, will quickly give them a "picture" of the material, than to refer to previous years’ books, which most often are not available at that time in the class.
