This diploma thesis aims at studying the Cretan diet as a means of upgrading and
increasing the quality of tourism in Crete. To begin with, facts are given on the
history of the Cretan diet from Minoan era. Furthermore it’s been clarified how the
Cretan diet differentiates from the Mediterranean one, through studies that illustrate
its benefits. In addition, the relationship between tourism, culture and food
(gastronomy) is clarified, thus resulting in their inseparable connection, since they
complement each other.
The certified Cretan products are then highlighted as well as what actions are being
taken locally, including ones by the hoteliers of Crete in order to promote Cretan
products. Next, the results of the survey, which was conducted during high season
through the distribution of questionnaires, are listed.
Research is based on three key guidelines. Firstly, whether hotel units satisfy
customers. Secondly, to what extent the Cretan diet has been integrated and promoted
by hotels. And finally, to what extent this action affects the quality of tourism in
Crete, thereby increasing customer satisfaction.
To sum up, the level of customer satisfaction is high as well as the promotion of
Cretan products within the hotel units making it a pole of attraction for a large number
of visitors, thus concluding that the promotion of the Cretan diet is constantly gaining
ground for the upgrading and growth, as well as the consolidation of a high rate of
quality tourism on the island of Crete.
