In recent years, Occupational Health is undoubtedly a significant factor of interest to employees, employers and the very society in which businesses operate in.
The promotion of health (both physical and psychological) in the workplace is a joint effort of all the employees at any administrative level they happen to be at. The overall goal is to build and create the optimal work conditions in order to improve their well-being within the work place.
Sedentary work appears to have a negative impact on employees health, by developing pain symptoms that express on their body as musculoskeletal disorders and conditions.
Undoubtedly, the medical history of every employee, that works an excessive amount of hours, in combination with the negative correlations a sedentary work has on the physical body can exacerbate his/hers state of health to a point that efficiency and productivity is affected.
In this essay we analyze all types of musculoskeletal troubles and the reasons that cause them, as well as the precautionary measures, with the aim of reducing the harmful effects on the health of the workers as defined by the ergonomics.
In order to record and highlight the main musculoskeletal disorders or other symptoms experienced by an employee nowadays, the daily activity of 15 office workers for 15 days was monitored via a dedicated biometrics portable device.
More specifically, the employees that took part in this research for this thesis wore the biometrics device (pacemaker), from the start of their day until the end of it and their return back home.
The device recorded the total activity of each participant, specifically the calorie consumption as well as the traveling distance from and to the workplace.
The results of the research in this study, regarding the effects on the physical health of office workers, can be used by businesses to capture their possible deviations from the ergonomic standards and to improve working conditions of their employees.
It also proposes solutions to employers who emphasize on the positive outcome of activating their staff so that they feel healthy and active, variables that will increase both the productivity and the overall performance of the employees as well as the performance in fulfilling their duties.
