The Energy issue is of utmost importance in Greece, as in all developed countries of the world. The Energy field includes the use of fossil fuels, one of which is the crude oil. Thus, for years, the crude oil refining industry has plagued the developed countries, since it has a knock-on effect on their economic life and their growth.
The main targets of this thesis are a) to analyze the Greek fuel industry and specifically the Greek crude oil refining industry, b) to identify the critical factors which affect continuously change it and c) a strategic analysis of Hellenic Petroleum Group, which is the leader in this industry.
The results reveal that the industry has been affected by the economic crisis, which has plagued the European Union and particularly Greece in recent years. In addition, there is a generalized pressure from the trends of modern civilization to protect the Earth. Specifically emphasis is placed on the environmental pollution which is caused by the chemical processes that are carried out during the production process, as well as on the impact of the use of the products that the industry produces. The consequences of these two critical parameters in the industry are obvious, first of all through the redistribution of demand for oil products by the Greek consumer, and secondly through the constant effort of the companies which are engaged in the industry, to modernize in order to adapt to the new environmental laws, but also to be able to adapt their production process to the new industry data in order to sustain themselves in their pursuit of profit.
In this inhospitable environment, the Hellenic Petroleum Group seems to have been well adapted, with its Annual Operating Results proving it, with emphasis on the last three financial years (2015,2016,2017), which are a good example for many Greek companies , even outside the fuel industry.
The result is not a coincidence, since the current Board of Directors of the Group faithfully applies the methods suggested by the Modern Strategic Management theory, with emphasis on the creation of quality products but mainly on supportive services. These factors increase the Group's profitability by creating value for the modern consumer and thus creating a competitive advantage for the Hellenic Petroleum Group.
