Museums and cultural organizations in general may take advantage of contemporary technologies, in
order to promote and disseminate information about their collections. The ease of use of modern tools
make the development of informational pages a rather easy and cost efficient process. These pages may
aggregate material from several sources, including text, narrations, still images and video. Such pages
turn a visitor’s navigation in the “virtual” museum to an attractive and interesting experience.
Museum own huge amount of invaluable information regarding their collections. This information variety
is a cornerstone for information dissemination and knowledge transfer to a global audience, which would
be impossible in other circumstances. Besides the hyperlink technology makes almost infinite
combinations of information sources feasible, allowing the learner to extend conventional information by
visiting related sources.
Given that museums are well organized information and knowledge sources, may turn their web sites to
integrated learning environments, allowing visitors not only to study informational pages and material but
also testing their knowledge by taking tests when they finish studying.
The proposed educational software will extend the informational mechanisms of the Museum of
Acropolis, offering not only a study environment but also an integrated knowledge testing facility. For
each informational unit a relevant test is maintained and presented to the visitor, in order to solve it and
get a grade. At the end of the entire study process, the visitor may take a global test, testing the overall
knowledge he acquired during his navigation to the museum’s pages. The main idea behind this approach
is to give the visitor an incentive to study historical and other relevant aspects in depth, in order to get the
highest grade at the competitive tests.
