This thesis explores the relationship between entrepreneurship and the institutional framework, as well as whether this relationship was affected by the crisis of 2007. The importance of entrepreneurship for the economy is that it allows people to bring creativity into the marketplace, it creates companies with the potential to hire millions of people and it brings new products and services to market.
The sample consists of 146 countries for the 1990-2016 period. We use data from several databases, such as Doing Business, Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, World Development Indicators, Financial Development Database, Barro Lee Educational Attainment Dataset and Economic Freedom of the World. Using multiple regression model and statistical inference, we tried to determine whether the institutional framework, the crisis and macro-economic factors affect entrepreneurship.
The empirical findings provide evidence for the importance of certain aspects of the institutional framework for entrepreneurship. For example, the procedures that are necessary to start a business, the time and cost of these, the inflation and the economic growth. The methodology followed, the lessons learned and compare them with similar studies are detailed in the following chapters of this thesis.
