Project portfolio management is a relatively new area within the broader sector of project management, which, nevertheless, has highly attracted the interest of both the academic and the professional society. Portfolio project management offers organizations and businesses the opportunity to maximize the value of their portfolio and to minimize it’s risk, as it allows them to select only the right projects, to allocate their resources with the most effective way as well as to evaluate the implementation and the progress of projects and to review, if necessary, the synthesis of their portfolio regularly.
The current thesis tries to investigate the extent to which the practices of project portfolio management, which are adopted by new product development organizations, align to the project portfolio management theories, as they are presented by the relevant literature. In order to extract conclusions regarding the research question, that was described before, the researcher conducts a study of the case of a new product development organization, based in Greece, which works on multiple projects of new products’ development and implements project portfolio management practices. The analysis of data and information, which were collected through the method of observation, reveals that, in some cases, the practices, that are applied, are in accordance with the relevant theories, while in other cases, they are different than the theory, suggested by the literature. In addition, the researcher suggests the development and use of a model, which can be used for the formal evaluation of initial ideas, which may turn into projects of new products’ development and analyzes the benefits that may arise for the organization, thanks to this model.
The first chapter of the thesis introduces the reader into the main research question, as well as to objective and the importance of the research. Next, a detailed review of the relevant literature follows, regarding the most important aspects of the project portfolio management area, which include the definition and meaning of project portfolio management, the meaning of governance, the historical evolution of project portfolio management, its importance and main objectives as well as the core procedures that are followed during its implementation. The third chapter analyzed the method of case study, which was used for the conduction of the research, while chapter four presents the results of the research and tries to answer some
of the main research sub-questions. Finally, chapter five offers a summary of the most important findings of the research, presents its limitations and makes suggestions for further research, that could be conducted regarding either the same or similar research questions, within a different context, as far as the sample is concerned.
