The present thesis focuses on the modern role of Manpower in all the activities of the Greek Merchant Shipping Sector. In the Business Administration Sector it is generally believed that Manpower plays a role of utmost importance in the efficient operation, evolution and development of each company. That is why the terms “Human Capital” or “Human Resources” are broadly used in a variety of bibliographical sources. These terms underline the vital role the human factor in a company. Companies are also mentioned as “Learning Organizations”, a term refering to their ability to acquire and produce knowledge in order to improve their various operations and procedures and their development. Manpower constitutes the basic cells of a Learning Organization, which perform the actions, which are necessary for the progress of the company, collect and process information, data and knowledge and generate new knowledge, which in combination with the cumulative experience acquired by the employees, either individually or all them together, contributes to the overall improvement of the company. Greek Merchant Shipping Sector is no exception to the above. A shipping company consists of many departments, which co-operate in order to achieve its goals. This thesis intends to emphasize on the great importance of Manpower in the proper operation and development of the Greek Merchant Shipping Companies and how knowledge is produced and used for their improvement.
