Institution and implementation of a quality management system according to the ISO 9001:2008 international standard in the 3rd department of obstetrics and gynecology of "Attikon" University Hospital

The globalization of the economy and the introduction of new technologies have brought about significal changes in the function of both companies and organizations, as well as in the nature of labor itself. The current circumstances by directly affecting the modern man as a worker, a consumer and a citizen, have created the need of new strategies, organizational models, functions and processes in order to ensure the harmonious function and competitiveness of each economic unit. Cost reduction is not the sole goal anymore. On the contrary, it is now easily understandable that the major characteristic of any successful corporation-organization is the introduction of quality management systems in every aspect of its activities. The aim of the present study is to enhance the already existing interest and to stress the need for a more intensive approach to the quality sector in the extremely sensitive area of hospital care and healthcare in general. Keeping in mind the special socio-economic circumstances present not only in our country but also in the majority of the western "civilized" countries, where the economic crisis tends to be transformed into a crisis of moral values and institutions, the implementation of administrative and controlling systems aiming at reducing the cost and improving effectiveness and quality is strongly warranted. After reviewing the history and the perceptions regarding the notion of quality and the circumstances which led to the initially timid appearance of quality control mechanisms until the fully integrated structures of modern quality management systems, we endeavored to create a Total Quality Management culture in the 3rd Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinic of "Attikon" University Hospital. This action is performed through the institution and implementation of a Quality Management System according to the ISO 9001:2008 international standard, in the hope that this will be the beginning of the improvement of healthcare services, having as prime goal citizens' welfare.
