This study present a framework for the effects associated with the construction and operation of an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) bunkering terminal in the port of Piraeus. The port of Piraeus is a competitive port in the Mediterranean region because of its location and for the variety of the services it can provide to its customers-vessels. Furthermore, the IMO measures, which are becoming strictier regarding sulphur emissions (SOx) in the Emission Control Areas (ECAs) and the EU’s directives make the construction of LNG bunkering terminals in ECA regions necessary and the Mediterranean region has been proposed as one of them. Therefore, the construction of an LNG bunkering terminal in the port of Piraeus will enhance its competitiveness and its role as a transit center. In the present study, an analysis of the macroeconomic effects is attempted in monetary and quantitative terms related to the construction and operation of the proposed terminal, including (i) the value added and (ii) the employment through input-output tables. Moreover, for the analysis of the employment effects the adjusted earnings gain approach will be used to monetizing the benefits in the Greek economy due to the increase of the employment.
