School readiness is a new term that is used in recent years and refers to the various skills a child requires in order to begin elementary school. What it essentially enquires is the ability of the child to start the process of learning to read and write in an organized and structured way.
In Greece, kids start the first class of elementary school around the age of six. However, that age is nothing more than a simple average, since there is a significant variance in when the children are actually ready for school. For sake of convenience and organization, our society tends to use these averages.
The purpose of the current paper is to evaluate the readiness of children of preschool age in their learning level for their introduction in the public education, while also includes their readiness in a socio-emotional level.
For the attainment of this research, questionnaires were drafted that were later filled by children of various nurseries around the city of Athens. The area of “Penteli” is also included separately since it houses a children’s hospital, a doctor of which, created the questionnaires.
The research and statistical analysis that follows will be based on nominal and ordinal scales. The resulting percentages and final conclusions will cover all basic cognitive levels a child needs to have in that specific age.
After a series of correlation tests between dependent and independent variables, we’ll focus on an in-depth statistical analysis using the method of multiple logistic regression in order to reach certain conclusions on what seems to affect the cognitive growth areas of a child of preschool age and how ready they are to begin public training. Additionally, we will discover the set of independent variables that are statistically significant in child growth.
