Abstract

Subject of the current paper are the Wearable devices and technologies and their penetration and contribution in the lives of people in the recent years. We will review the field and we will introduce our research and its findings regarding the wearable penetration in the Greek area, conducted by the author in June 2016. We will see that while more than half of the Greek population is aware about wearable devices, their adoption is in a low level compared with other countries. There is however, a rising trend in trusting the technology in many sectors including business, taking into account possible issues related to security. Afterwards we will conduct a comparative study about their contribution in health, work, fitness, entertainment and the general welfare, noting the advantages of their use such as improved safety, efficiency and wealth of data for processing and analysis. We will conclude discussing the obstacles of adapting the technology as it exists today regarding technical issues and economical costs as well as speculations and dangers on electronic security, data theft and privacy protection that are related with wearable devices.
