Human Resource Management is defined as "The design, implementation and maintenance of strategies to manage people for optimum business performance". In other words, Human Resource Management deals with the way people are managed in a business in order to meet the strategic goals. The functional goals set by the Human Resource Management Department should necessarily be consistent with the goals of the company. Organizations need to manage their human resources effectively in order to be successful and achieve their goals.
Human Resource is initially focusing on policies, strategies and on managerial systems. Human Resource departments and units in any organization usually undertake many different activities, including employee recruitment, employee induction, training and development and performance appraisal. Human Resource also deals with industrial relations and promotes the organizational changes, giving a strong effect on culture and organization’s philosophy. Human Resource Management covers areas such as job design and analysis, workforce planning, selection and recruitment, training and development and performance management.
Effective human resource management becomes more and more important in recent times. Most organizations nowadays do not only deal with the production of goods, but they also provide services. Obviously, people are the critical resource in the quality and customer service level of any kind of company. Also, the high level of competition requires that businesses are both efficient and productive. That could be difficult unless the workforce is well motivated, has the right skills and is effectively organized.
In our study we will consider Human Resource Management in the Retail Sector, by considering two companies, “AB Basilopoulos” and “LIDL Hellas SA”, since both companies focus on lowering employee turnover and retaining the talent and knowledge held by their workforce.
