The goal of this master thesis is the development of a modern application that meets the needs of modern shipping for supplies to ships traveling to all corners of the earth.
The way supply cycle works for shipping has its own peculiarities due precisely to the fact that the vessels are not static. They don’t have permanent address where supplies could be sent to. The communication between ship and office ashore has always been difficult and time consuming. An unexpected change of ship's itinerary could invalidate the whole supply cycle with very serious impact on ship’s good operation. The handwritten management of inventory on behalf of the vessel is very difficult, time consuming and unreliable. On the other hand, the office ashore isn’t able to have real time knowledge of the exact stocks of each vessel in order to proceed to the necessary near future planning. Office cannot easily estimate period budget and reports. Especially when talking about a fleet of dozens of ships, the work becomes extremely difficult for Supply Department’s Head Officer. Ship’s requisitions are sent to the company and the company should look for a suitable supplier. The Supplier must fully understand what the requested materials are and deliver them accurately, reliably and according to every asked detail to the requested destinations, on time. On behalf of the owner, he should be absolutely sure that the procurement system ensures the healthy operation of the fleet, through unimpeachable standards of quality, reliability and best price.
With the implementation of eship supply application for first time in shipping, ship, shipping company and supplier will be able to follow real time the supply cycle and correspond to the course of the procurement request. This is achieved because all actions are recorded in a cloud database accessible by all cooperating parties but with different access rights. Modern programming languages and the decline in the rate of satellite internet allows us to suggest an evolution in management of ship supply cycle improving the life of ship farers travelling all over the world.
