The need for constantly improving the skills of the seafarers combined with the ever increasing
needs of the industry have deemed necessary for every management company to have an efficient
training program as part of the Safety Management System. This is not only needed by the signs of
our times but also a requirement of international conventions such as SOLAS (Safety Of Life At
Sea) and the ISM code. A requirement that a company must comply to in order to be cleared to
manage vessels. Although the seafarers start their contracts having completed training courses
depending on their rank and specialty as well as basic safety rules, the most effective kind of
training they receive is always during their term on the vessel on subjects that show lack of
familiarity. The role of the trainer must be assumed by a company’s representative who needs to
have the right tools to see his duty through appropriately. The mobile device technology can offer
these tools in the most efficient way since it implements simple, user friendly environment and the
much needed mobility for traveling. In this dissertation a mobile application of this kind will be
designed and developed, one that covers these specific needs of the trainer of maritime officers on
board.
