In this thesis, a review of the legislative framework underlying the unification of energy markets in EU, based on the relevant directives (‘energy packages’) is carried out, along with the description of the unification process and the first outcomes and experiences yielded from the operation of the unified market. Initially, the three energy packages that specify the process towards the markets unification are described in detail. Next, the European target model is presented as well as the steps carried out towards its implementation. Special consideration is given on the characteristics of the Greek energy market organization and the challenges that are expected to emerge during its incorporation to the target model. Moreover, the characteristics of the energy markets of the countries already involved in the unification process are presented, focusing on their evolution and the difficulties encountered during their unification. The scope of the thesis is to present a general aspect for the dynamics and prospects of the unified energy market in Europe and its consequences to each European country, as well as indicate the particularities and correlations existing between the various markets.
