Abstract

The purpose of this project is to explore the levels of the emotional intelligence and the personality of a sample group of public servants and the extent to which their emotional intelligence or personality affects their professional performance. To begin with, there is a theoretical approach of the terms of emotional intelligence, personality and self evaluation with reference to their effect on the person’s performance in their work place and duties. Next, the project focuses on the study of those terms in relation with the field of public services, presenting figures based on the Greek public services and the results of the practical survey and research. Books and articles on emotional intelligence and personality were used to compose the theoretical part of the project whereas a rating scale was used to collect and organize the data from the initial survey, in which the subjects were asked to evaluate themselves using a scale ranging from the lowest to the highest level. There was a total of 119 questionnaires which showed that the most common personality type according to the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, MBTI (which is analyzed in chapter 2) is ESTJ type ( determination) who has the traits of a reasonable, regulatory and well-organized employee. The second most common type, though, seems to have the highest levels of emotional intelligence and best professional performance. It is the ENTP type (Initiative) that includes people who always seek for challenges while they adjust themselves easily to change and innovations. On the other hand, the lowest levels of emotional intelligence and personality are found in the ISFJ type ( Commitment ) who is considered to be honest, loyal and devoted.
