Abstract
The primary aim of this dissertation thesis is to define, present and apply course design principles, practices and advice to courses created within the Moodle learning management platform.
Towards this direction, advice and widely accepted design principles have been sought and identified in the relevant literature. To follow this advice and abide by the proposed design principles are requisite not only for the effective and sound creation of courses that are easy to use and attractive both in terms of appearance and content to future users (students, pupils) but also for achieving the educational objectives set. A thorough study of the relevant literature also revealed well designed Moodle courses that have been based on such best practices and design principles. Furthermore, a number of Moodle sites that are both appealing and original as far as design is concerned are also demonstrated.
The study of the existent literature also led to the observation that information on such principles and advice is altogether missing from the Greek literature despite the fact that Moodle use and course creation manuals exist in abundance. Emphasis should be drawn to the fact that placing educational materials available to the individual teacher in Moodle is not enough for the creation of a well-designed course. The knowledge of appropriately structuring these materials within the platform, the way they appear and the acknowledgement of the principles and requirements the effective Moodle course design poses are of tantamount importance. Finally, familiarization with Moodle modules’ management and use to render the application of the aforementioned principles plausible is also essential.
Within the context of the present study, two online Moodle courses meeting the demands of, being consistent with the design principles recorded and serving as examples of implementing a course on the Moodle course management platform have, therefore, been designed and are presented.
