This thesis is primarily an attempt to describe the activity of transshipment, while also will be examined the development and operation of modern mega transshipment hubs, as well as, those elements that contributed to their appearance and development. Then follows a review of the modern literature in order to determine the currently position, held by those nodes within global supply chains and their role in shaping their competitiveness. In the meanwhile, we consider the development of a specific function in the region of the Mediterranean Sea and we present the criteria that nowadays have shaped and continue to affect the development of the activity in this region. Also we carry out a comparative analysis of major hubs in the Mediterranean, according their data movement collected during the years 2003 till 2013, while identifying the factors that contributed towards this. Finally, some considerations are follow that appear during the preparation of this thesis and suggestions for areas that may require further research.
