Islamic finance is based on the principles of Islamic Law, Shariah, and it is used widely in the Muslim world. The key features of Islamic finance is justice and equality, which is achieved by excluding any form of interest (riba) from the transactions and by avoiding specific business activities that are not allowed by the Koran. Therefore, the Muslims have the opportunity to make investments with their money according to their religious beliefs. The Islamic finance structures and products created, result not only in the economic growth, bus also in the welfare of the society. In the shipping industry, in cases where the conventional financing is inadequate, Islamic finance may cover this gap, creating many benefits for the shipping companies. There are several examples of successful implementation of this type of financing in the Muslim world and the West, which make it a competitive alternative for the shipping companies. In the environment of the global credit and financial crisis, where the conventional financing is restricted, Islamic finance can be a sufficient solution for the recovery of the global shipping industry and consequently of world trade and economy.
