The social policy to benefit the disadvantaged, historically, appears with the existence of structured societies and it is a necessity for the harmonious coexistence within them. On deficiencies of the vectors carrying out this policy, over time, the Church and especially the Orthodox one, with its dynamism, values and dogmas, assumes additional role through philanthropy, culminating in the Byzantine era. Nowadays, throughout the Greek territory, it operates a wide network of institutions, funds, programs and develops, in general, initiatives in performing welfare work. The decentralization, financial and administrative autonomy and the complexity of decision-making are dominant elements. Pioneering the implementation of such a project, quantitatively and qualitatively, the Holy Metropolis of Monemvasia and Sparta, which is examined in the new conditions, created by the economic crisis.
