Despite the fact that authors worldwide have investigated the macroeconomic risks in transportation, limited research has been conducted regarding the microeconomic risks. The purpose of the present thesis is to analyze the microeconomic risks in transportation and, furthermore, to examine their impacts in corporations. The term microeconomic risks refer to those risks that the firms have to deal with and not the economy as a whole.
The literature review has showed that the companies, in whatever sector they belong (sea transportation, air, road and rail), have to deal with some "common" challenges such as the increase in fuel prices. However, companies face a number of other risks which are associated to the specific characteristics of each transportation sector.
As far as the impacts are concerned, the research has showed that they are closely related to the cost. Each determinant contributes to the cost raise. That creates a number of problems to the companies and, in many cases, places sustainability issues.
