Epidemiological data throughout the past years show that incidents of mental disorder tend to rise, costing the national health system increasing amounts of money. Specifically, mental disorder is considered one of the main reasons of illness and disability worldwide. During the second half of the 20th century, the development of psychiatric science in combination with specific influences by the society and political events, allowed the steady abandonment of large psychiatric hospitals. They were replaced by smaller community structures that were ready to aid the rehabilitation of the psychiatric patients and their inclusion back to the society. Several western countries exerted radical changes to psychiatric treatment. The psychiatric health system in Greece initiated its upgrade in the 1980’s by abandoning the psychiatric hospital model, which was the standard, up to that date. The attempt for improvement started in the National Psychiatric center of Leros. The European Community supported most of the plans economically. In 1999, community psychiatric treatment was established by law and thereafter deinstitutionalisation commenced along with psychosocial rehabilitation and the ten year program Psychargos, which was the most important step taken, towards the upgrade of psychiatric treatment in Greece. Psychargos included a new net of psychosocial rehabilitation services, deinstitutionalisation structures and supported psychiatric treatment services in the community. As a result large psychiatric institutions of the past were minimized and some seized to operate completely. The noted progress aimed at the psychiatric health in Greece is fairly important. However, problems arose due to lack of a greater national plan about psychiatric health, limited resources both human and economical and neglection of the psychiatric needs of children and adolescents. In order to solve them, specific actions are required by the state and the community. The National Strategic Report 2007-2013 aims at the continuation and fulfillment of the psychiatric reform in Greece.
